Wheel Spoke - Rim Spoke
When auto wheels were first built, spokes were employed to give them sustainable strength. In short, a spoke is a rod that attaches from the center of a rim's hub to the outer rim. When laced properly, many different spokes give the rim great strength and flexibility. Today's wheel spoke is a long way away from yesterday's wagon wheel spokes. Back then, spokes were carved from logs and attached to wooden wheels. A wheel would usually use 6 to 12 spokes for stability. Some car rims today use over 100 small spokes or more.
One of the advantages of spoke rims is the ability to fix the wheel without replacing it. If the wheel becomes bent in any fashion, a repair person can remove damaged spokes, return the outer rim to its original shape, and then re-lace more spokes into the rim, thus making it look and function like brand new again. Another upside to spoke wheels has to do with the strength compared to weight. Since spokes are relatively light, used in a pattern to provide optimum support, most spoke wheels are lighter than solid cast and other pattern alloy wheels. (Of course, spokes here are the thin metal rods and not the thick alloy peg designs, more suitably referred to as mags.)
There are really no cars releasing true spoke styles with factory models these days. Although models like the Ford Mustang offer what they called the "5-spoke" rims, these spokes are really the aforementioned mag-style - a thicker spoke that isn't laced through the rim and connected to the hub, but rather welded or cast in a single piece.
The real-deal spoke rims are widely popular in auto magazines, hip hop videos, movies, etc. These rims have from around 30 spokes, all the way up to 200 spokes. They are handmade and very expensive. Although you can find them used and on sale, these types of rims are going to cost a lot more than regular alloy rims. Some of the most popular spoke rims are chrome, silver and gold.
