Motorcycle Rims - Motorcycle Wheels

Wheels aren't all that different in principle. They're round, they roll, and in order to give the best performance, rims have to be rugged and balanced. However, motorcycle rims and car rims are different in many ways. In fact, a regular bicycle rim has more in common with a motorcycle rim than a car rim does. It has to do with the way it's constructed and attached to the body.

Basically, there are only two main types of motorcycle rims: Solid wheels and spoke wheels. A solid wheel is made of an entire one-piece past. This unit is usually cast in aluminum alloy, but sometimes they're machine-cut using intensely high-pressured water to cut through the alloy like butter. With spoke wheels, the rims are laced with various spokes that act as support. Although most of these rims are also alloy, you can find spoke rims that are made of steel on the outer portion.

Aluminum or magnesium alloy isn't the only material used in the creation of solid wheels. These days, carbon fiber is becoming a popular option on racing bikes and custom jobs. The one big advantage offered by carbon fiber is the weight saved. This makes bikes easier to control at high speeds, and also provides better heat dissipation when braking, thus enabling brakes to work more effectively. However, carbon fiber wheels are definitely at the high-end of the spectrum in terms of pricing options.

Most stock wheels on motorcycles are cast aluminum. Since the aluminum alloy is already a rather clean piece of metal, most rims are simply factory polished and it gives a look of chrome. But many motorbike enthusiasts prefer the real thing, and they will pay a lot more for chrome wheels as an extra or they will purchase them aftermarket. Chroming is done by electrically charging the metal and dipping it into a tank with chrome. The chrome particles then cling to the rim, giving it a beautiful, seamless finish.

Motorcycle rims needs to be properly cared for. The hub of these rims contains the bearings and necessary parts that enable a smooth movement. The shape of the rim is also extremely important. Any slight bend in a motorcycle rim can cause a serious accident.
