20" Wheel - 20" Wheels - 20 Inch Rims
Although they've just become widely popular due to the aftermarket varieties seen in rap videos, movies and magazines, 20-inch rims have been around for a long time. Mostly in use on larger cars (large 4-door sedans) and smaller trucks, 20" wheels serve a few purposes other than looking good. In today's market, however, 20s are purchased for purely aesthetic purposes. Ironically, if your car is setup to handle 20-inch rims, you're also gaining performance points.
It's all about the size with a 20" rim. Obviously, the wheel adorning this rim is going to be larger. This is where 20s can have a real advantage over 18s, and if you current car has 18" rims you should have absolutely no problem going with 2 more inches. In some instances, you may have to use a smaller tire. But by and large, so long as the hub offset and the lug pattern is the same, the fit should be seamless.
One of the more complicated performance boosts you'll receive from 20-inch rims has to do with the improved axle ratio. But some of the more common sense performance boosts have to do strictly with the larger tire size. For example, a 20" set of wheels should grip the road better by providing more surface area. This also gives your car or truck more stability for better handling at higher speeds. And while you won't witness a huge difference from a 17 or 18" wheel, it will still be noticeable.
Most 20-inch rims today, especially the aftermarket varieties, are made of alloy. Alloy rims are simply a combination of aluminum and magnesium. These rims weigh less than steel, which already helps to boost performance; and by itself, the alloy material is much more attractive than steel. Not to mention that alloy rims are often electrically charged and dipped in chrome, gold and silver to give a great finish.
